To add on
I don't like tours because:
1. Spend more time travelling that seeing
2. They bring you to 'compulsory' local produce stores
3. Companions may not be .... 'compatible'
4. Amount of time at locations too fixed, cannot stay longer if like, cannot leave early if don't
I take tours to places which I've never been before because its 'safer' and all arranged for me although its true as listed by ScootS....
Places I've already been and confident of going by myself, I go F&E !!!
But then again I don't like to travel because fear of flying... I go like once a year with family only...
Maybe. Depends on destination.
Some places are really hard to navigate unless you are quite seasoned and know the language. Security is of another concerned.
Some places . Go for tour group for what???? Go genting or phuket or bangkok tour group????
Depends on who are my travel companions. Whether are they garang or not.
Ok guys, the question is targeted at places you've not been before, and language is a very possible obstacle, eg Korea, parts of Europe, Japan, even parts of China.

i will take tours for korea, remote china, mongolia.
but for europe, it is better to free and easy, all it needs is a travel map and a translation book/ frequently used phrases... but thats just me.
